Like many a good idea, Stirling Gin came about after a few drinks. This was after the inaugural Stirling Gin Festival.
Cameron and June McCann run the local Stirling Whisky Shop. We had seen a huge increase in the Gin market. So much so that they launched The Stirling Gin Festival in 2014. However, what was missing was a gin from Stirling!
We started in spring 2015 in the kitchen being created in a little cooper pot still ‘Jinty’. She worked hard for over 6 months or so whilst botanical after botanical was tried, mixing combination with combination until finally the recipe was agreed and the one being produced today.
On numerous walks with their dog, the nettles were an enemy until Stirling Gin came to the fore and thought what better a super food to use than the lovely nettle, so it was rubber gloves at the ready and off a foraging they went.
Many a good friend and gin lovers helped in the tasting panel until it was decided Stirling Gin was ready to get set loose in the every growing world of gins. Our Gin is infused with hand picked Stirlingshire Nettles, Basil, Lemon Peel, Orange Peel, Juniper and Angelica Root.
The gin runs now take place in Annie, a 450-litre copper still. The Nettle and Basil are placed in the gin basket at the top of the still. The juniper, angelica, orange and lemon are placed directly into the pot. There is no maceration period. The still is started up straight away and each run produces 370 bottles of our gin cut to 43% ABV.
The first batch was distilled on the 28th of October 2015. This was the 26th wedding anniversary of founders the McCann’s. The gin was launched at 2015’s festival.
