Adnams Copper House Distillery, sits within the Adnams brewery in Southwold. It’s the most energy-efficient distillery in the UK. The distillery generates water and steam for the brewery, forming an integral part of our overall sustainable production system.
Adnams is the first brewery / distillery (a bristillery?!) in England that’s able to produce high quality spirits directly from malted grains all the way through to the finished product. We use the same local ingredients to make Adnams Copper House spirits – barley, rye, wheat and oats – as we do for our beers.
Adnams Copper House Distillery use the best modern distilling techniques and a small batch process. We aim to create spirits with exceptional purity, quality and, of course, flavour. They key here is our ability to control every aspect of our spirits production – we even grown our own rye from fields just a few miles from the distillery.
Launched in 2010, our spirits have received many plaudits and awards from across the world, including the coveted ‘world’s best’ trophies for our gin and vodka. Visitors can discover more with tours of the Adnams Copper House Distillery.
Adnams Copper House Gin is bursting with juniper, fresh lemon and orange notes as well as warming hints of anise. Our Copper House Gin is distilled from East Anglian malted barley at our artisan distillery in Southwold. Our copper pot stills are handmade and create a wonderfully flavoursome spirit. This smooth, rich spirit is then redistilled with six carefully chosen botanicals to impart their distinctive aromas and flavours.
Our Single Malt vodka is distilled from East Anglian malted barley. Adnams’ Masterbrewer, Fergus Fitzgerald, makes a beer ‘wash’ which is fermented to around 6% abv without the addition of hops. Our head distiller, John McCarthy, then takes this beer and puts it through a ‘beer stripping’ column which removes all the alcohols to create a ‘low wine’ (around 80 – 85% abv).
The ‘low wines’ are subsequently distilled in our copper pot still . They are then purified further in rectification columns to create a clean, pure spirit. The result is a beautifully smooth vodka, with with natural sweetness from our locally-grown barley, and plenty of character from our hand-made copper pot still.
Adnams Copper House Distillery has won a number of awards including the World’s Best Gin at the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2013. East Coast Vodka won ‘Best Varietal’ at The World Vodka Awards 2015.
